Managing chaos in the Indian infrastructure sector; Competitive Intelligence as a tool of business continuity

Infrastructure development has always been a major driver of economic growth across the world. However, due to certain recent developments in the commercial, political and global security scenarios, this sector has taken a severe hit on multiple fronts and geo-political rivalries have further complicated matters, especially in Asia. In such chaotic and uncertain market conditions, competitive intelligence may hold the key in navigating the path to business success in the realm of Competition, Co-opetition and Cooperation. This research paper picks up instances of Competitive Intelligence being applied in the Indian Urban infrastructure sector and how it had proven significant for the respective organizations in meeting their business goals. It not only underscores the superiority of Competitive Intelligence over conventional market research and data driven analytical approach, but also establish the moral grounding of Competitive Intelligence on Ethno-legal perspective that distinguishes it from Corporate Spying and Industrial Espionage, and yet bring greater benefit with lesser risks involved. Without incurring much cost, Competitive Intelligence can be carried out effectively and efficiently given the tried and tested age old method of HUMINT (Human Intelligence) and a comparatively newer methodology like ACH (Analysis of Competing Hypothesis) in a large spectrum of business arenas. The paper emphasizes on application of competitive intelligence in environments where data availability is minimal and activities of liaison and collaboration by various players in the competitive scenario may hold the key.
